Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 wipes out DVD on dv3

Just upgraded to Vista Ultimate SP2 and the dv3's fancy little DVD/CD device is now not even recognized by the OS.  It swallowed the upgrade disk and the only eject mechanism is via software, so I can't even get the disk back.  Anyone have a clue as to how to proceed?
