I wouldn't recommend it UNLESS it starts reoccuring, as for me it happened whenever I tried to go beyond the C:\ drive in "Computer" so if I tried going to Program Files > WINDOWS > Users > ANY OTHER FOLDERS LISTED HERE it would crash the Windows Explorer on me which a Recovery resolved ..
So, Do Not do a Recovery Unless it starts happening alot ..

Dude, this JayJay guy knows what he is talking about.
I could not believe it, but I tried it and it works.
I had the same annoying problem with my HP laptop dv7-1448dx.
If I had multiple applications open and tried to use Alt-Tab to switch between open applications, windows explorer would freeze and need to be restarted almost 100% of the time.
Other things that I might be doing in windows explorer, such as moving, copying, or renaming files, would cause windows explorer to freeze.
Eventually, VISTA would prompt me to restart windows explorer. I would, of course, allow it to restart.
All open windows explorer windows would close and the windows taskbar would reset and the problem was temporarily resolved.
When I read the this post and saw the suggestion of resetting IE (and I have IE8 installed) I thought, WTF... who is this clown?
You know what though, despite my 20+ of PC experience, this proves that I don't know everything.
I clicked on Tools / Internet Options / Advanced Tab, then clicked on the button to reset Internet Explorer Settings.
When I restarted IE, I tried like mad to get my PC to freeze. Opened several explorer windows and used Alt-Tab to switch.
Prior to the reset, I could guarantee you that windows explorer would freeze up.
Not any longer.
I am a believer and if you're having this problem, just do the IE reset.

Congratulations on knowing the difference between windows explorer and Internet explorer.
While they may appear as separate entities and are launched by separate methods, they share MUCH common code.
For a novice to understand the difference, just click on the start button and enter "explorer" in the start search text entry box.
Two different programs will appear (perhaps more), namely "Internet Explorer" and "Windows Explorer".
IE is used for viewing HTML and other "web" related content... what the layman refers to as "surfing the net".
WE (windows explorer) is used for "surfing your PC". It lets you look at resources on your PC that may have content.
This could be your hard drive, DVD/CD drive, USB flash drives, network resources, media cards, etc.
