I need to down-convert the above laptop to XP Home. When I first start up the XP CD, it ends up at a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). Do I need to insert a 3-rd party SATA HD driver via the F6 prompt? Where do I get such a driver?
Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

Your HP laptop was designed specifically to run Windows Vista. There are no drivers available that will permit you to install the older Windows XP operating system.

Carey,
For you to say that there are "no drivers" that will allow this laptop to run XP is incorrect. Yours was not the answer I was looking for. It may be a challenge to find the drivers, but I can assure you they are out there.

Search for "DV5 XP" over at http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupp
I don't know if there has been a successful XP load or not ... but you will have access to several other peoples experiences
Also type your model# into the "Products & Support" page so that you have a copy of your specifications. You MAY be the first to attempt your exact configuration...
Luck and REPORT your PROGRESS for others to be able to access!

You need Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA,either using a USB Floppy and F6 or slipstreamed with Nlite:
Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
There have been downgrades done on these laptops at the old forum mentioned above. It is trickier than most with the IDT Audio.

Cheryl,
-> You need Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA...
-> Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
This system has an AMD Turion CPU. It doesn't sound right that they would be using Intel anything on an AMD system.
I tried the ICH9 driver and still got the BSOD on Setup Startup.

Ok, we are making progress. Don't worry, I will post a final summary once I get to the end of all this.
Audio - oddly enough this was working, well sort of. The speakers worked fine, sounds came out. The device manager said the device was NOT happy. I got an updated driver (IDT Audio) via Windows Update and the audio stopped working completely. I tried rolling back the driver, but still no sound. I might try a system restore to see if that will undo it.
I need a SM Bus Controller driver and an ACPI driver.
