There are a few indivduals who state that they have installed XP on your laptop model.
Here is a link to a blog on the subject.
It is quite difficult to find XP chipset drivers because AMD/ATI has either not bothered to produce the drivers or simply not made them accessible from the corporate support website.
Some chipset manufacturers do not find it to be cost effective to make their newer chipsets backwardly compatible to an older OS.

First of all, I recommend you to use VISTA as OS.
This model use IDT sound chip, that XP driver having trouble with the factory install BIOS.
Some of CQ45 users found they will lose control for brighness setting (Fn+ F7 and F8) and needs to do BIOS update to fix it.
Go to your support vista page and download the latest BIOS.
Please take extra cautions when flashing BIOS!
However, If XP is critical for your applications please perform below steps.
____
Your model needs AMD sata driver to be sliptreamed onto XP CD installer.
If you did it right, you'll pass BSOD error.
Use Nlite to slipstream AMD sata driver.
A good guide to sliptream sata driver, here
Note: Do NOT use sata driver from that guide, your sata driver is given below.
AMD SATA AHCI Controller Driver, here
or
if you wish an AMD SATA driver from HP site, here
extract sp39719 to a folder and use files in RAID7xx folder
Important Note:
Use the option of instert from multiple driver folder.
Select ONLY x86 driver for AMD SATA AHCI when asked
Nlite download, here
Since you have a freedos model no need to do Vista Recovery cd/dvd

@pmctm
Thank you for your post that may came from your own experience, could you make some comments why did you choose sp41616 instead of above posts?
More comments would be useful to others instead of just list of drivers that many people can find it.
