I have a notebook with almost the same spec as yours, Intel CPU+8400M GS, it run XP very well including external ports for headphones and mic.
In order to fix your problem, uninstall the current audio driver, use add/remove programs in control panel, reboot.
Try here for conexant audio driver, I modded Toshiba driver to fit HP external ports setting.
About CPU temps, download HWmonitor and post your temps. Our models have been reported a fragile one due to Nvidia GPU issue. However mine still running well since it never be forced to run intensive GPU applications.
