asghost.exe continuously taking 49% of CPU (twin core)

When I'm using my Compaq 6715b (AMD Turion X2 64, Win Vista Business SP1 32 bit), I'll notice that the fan has been running for while. Running Task Manager, I see that process asghost.exe (C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\IAM\Bin, ver 2.5.0.57) is taking around 45 - 49% of CPU. Even if I stop doing anything, it still just sits there chewing up the CPU.

I'm also experiencing *BLACK* S.O.D. once or twice a day (Screen goes black although back light is still on), caps lock does nothing, mute button will toggle, Alt-Ctrl-Del does nothing, power off for 5 seconds needed to turn off. Dunno if it's related. 'Chat' technician gave usual assistance of "reinstall Op Sys from scratch and see if it still happens", but I'm waiting for when I have a spare week or two to reinstall all my programs when I don't need a computer (I'm a software developer).

Same problem with asghost.exe here.
I'm running Windows XP Pro, and my asghost.exe -version is 3.0.0.070.

Resinstalled the Credential Manager, but this did fix my problem.

I too have high, continuous CPU usage from asghost.exe ("Global Virtual Card Host") on my Compaq 8510w Centrino-based laptop.

Can anyone offer a resolution?  Can I simply disable the autorun or service or whatever this thing is?  Is that safe?

For me, seems to be related to the use of Firefox with the HP Credential Manager.  Details posted to the following bug:

though I'm unsure of whether this is actually a FF bug or an HP one.

asghost.exe is also a problem on my Vista64 installation, especially when I use Firefox and FF displays our webmail (Zimbra). Zimbra polls the server constantly and asghost.exe intercepts this poll and tries to see if it should supply credentials or not. I have tried asking asghost.exe NOT to monitor FF, but it doesn't work (it will restart monitoring FF on its own eventually). But asghost.exe shouldn't use this much cpu time regardless of what FF does.

Also, when I search my mailbox in FF/Zimbra, the Credential Manager pops up and asks if it should supply login information and has auto-filled the username with the content of the Zimbra search field.

asghost.exe obviously has serious trouble handling dynamic web content.

Go to the Task Manager > services > services (in the right hand bottom corner). Not sure how to get there in XP.

It should be in the list on that page. Right click on it > properties > choose to disable it in the drop down box.

It's not running or installed on my dv8 and I don't think you will miss it either.

Yes, I can confirm that this is also happending to me with firefox.  The bugzilla report for firefox also shows the same symptoms.

Running Firefox 3.6.13 and HP Credential manager 2.0 and I have the same
problem.  Some web sites cause the CPU to raise for Firefox.exe and asghost.exe
where each of those processes are running at 25-30% CPU on a dual core laptop
(basically pegs one core). Logging out of credential manager makes everything
ok.

After upgrading to Windows 7 from a fresh install - and letting Microsoft install all drivers needed I'm no longer running asghost.exe / Crederntial manager.

So if you dont need the features of the program you dont need to install it in Win7.

(finger scanning is included in  Windows 7)
