Vista has the ability to repair start up problems. XP does not.
You can try a restore point that predates the problem or try F8 on the BIOs screen and choose 'last best configurations". If neither of these work you may be stuck.
Here are some generic fixes that might make it work a little better:

It's always a good idea to add RAM.
In your situation I'd be doing backups of this PC regularly. Something is wrong in the most basic portion of the OS and may lead to a system crash at any time.

hi ,
yes I have find yhe audio drive and it is work ok.
PCI Device
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&SUBSYS_30F7103C&REV_03\3&B1B FB68&0&D8
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33867
create a file start_audio.bat, write on it such string devcon.exe restart "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E" , then save it C:\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.
or download it from here http://www.filecloud.com/files/category.php?user_c
download the file DEVCON.EXE from microsoft. http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/1/f/11f7d
Unzip the file, you have two folders copy the i386\devcon.exe into c:\windows
and yous what about the boot it take a long time or no, and what OS do yous install it XP pro SP3 or what and have you other problem on your DV4.
Regards,

With DEVCON.EXE sound works fine, but another solution without a bat file on startup is include a key on registry to start this services. A key like this:
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ru
Name: "devcon" or "start_audio"
Type: REG_SZ
Value: "line of batch file for devcon execution"
I try it and work fine without a bat file.

Run msconfig
Look under the start up tab
Uncheck any programs you do not want running at startup
Click apply
Click okay
restart your system
Go into BIOS and test your hard drive
You could also test your memory download memtest86+
