copying a recovery disc

hello,

i've just created a recovery disc for my compaq presario cq40.  i burned it on a verbatim DVD+R DL RW.  recovery manager won't allow me to create another recovery disc and says only one recovery disc per laptop is allowed.

can i copy this disc? just for double back up reasons. will it work just the same as the original disc i created with recovery manager?

I believe it won't let you create another one due to copy right infringement or something to that nature.

I think you can copy them using image burn.

 http://download.cnet.com/ImgBurn/3000-2646_4-10847481.html

I just tried this program and it allowed me to copy my HP factory recovery discs, so there is a good chance it will work for you.

Use the "create image files from disc", it creates ISO files that you store on your hard drive that you can then burn to a DVD and creating a copy of your recovery discs. I think you may need to use dual layer discs here.

You will have to tell Image Burn where to put the ISO files. I like to create a new folder in drive "C" and put them in there.

As for your other question, it should be an exact copy that will work. You can always try it later and stop at the point where it warns you that you are about to format your hard drive and this is the last chance to stop the recovery process.

Also see this post here where Cheryl has left some very useful links on creating bootable back up discs.

 http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and-software/Creating-Recovery-DVD-s-and-deleting-the...

Second one from the top. I wouldn't even bother burning a second set. I would just make some new ones using Cheryls' links. This way if you do have a catastrophic failure it will put the hard drive back the way you want it and not HP's factory image.

Please give a KUDOS to Cheryl as well as my self if you have found this post useful.  Thanks  :smileyvery-happy:

I ran an experiment and actually tried this and it works very well. When you use Image Burn make sure to tick the box off to "verify" your DVD. I think it may already be ticked off as default though.

I had a spare hard drive to try it out on and I only allowed the recovery process to go as far as the warning and then I cancelled it. Had I let it go all the way I am quite sure that it would have worked.

Re: copying a recovery disc

If you really want to be safe, buy an imaging software product and take weekly hard drive images.  It's a lot better than going back to ground zero using the HP recovery disks.  The HP recovery disks have goods and bads.

Acronis True Image or Paragon Hard Disk Mangement Suite are very good products.

@Big_Dave

I agree on the Imaging tip, subject in the link offered by HaggisCat. Several good free ones that I recommend often.I have used Macrium though Vista and Windows 7 and it is great software..super fast, too. Extra feature in Paragon that isn't in Macrium is the ability to create a bootable USB flash disk, which is better for the laptops shipping without CD/DVD drive.

Easus ToDo Backup HERE

Macrium Reflect Disk Imaging HERE
