Re: could i have put windows 764 bit on this laptop--hp dv6000 2006 edition, came with xp?

Hi:

You can run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor at the link below and it should report if you can run a 64 bit version of Windows 7 on your PC.

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=20

Note that there are many variations of the dv6000 series. Everybody that has one shows the dv6000 on the screen bezel. Mine shows that it is a dv6700 on the product sticker on the bottom and even that isn't right. Mine is a dv6810us and it can run W7 64 bit because I installed it and it works.

I found out the precise model number of my PC by running this HP tool at the link below:

Re: could i have put windows 764 bit on this laptop--hp dv6000 2006 edition, came with xp?

Hi Paul,

I did run the advisor first--and perhaps I did not read it right. The top section seems to be for 32 bit and the bottom has info on the 64--as in no upgrade, but new install, which is what I did on the 32 bit Windows 7 Prof. I will re-read it again carefully and use your link to ascertain what model I have.

As a student, I bought the Win. 7 for 30.00 and perhaps if I can run 64 bit, then they may  allow me to exchange it.

Thanks for your advice--I'll re-post if I hear something substantial.

Steve

Re: could i have put windows 764 bit on this laptop--hp dv6000 2006 edition, came with xp?

Hi Paul,

The indentifier tool did not work--I called HP earlier and he said the laptop was too old, and no info like I wanted was available concerning XP to 64 bit. I'm fairly sure the XP was 32 bit, (2002 version home edition) so perhaps I may just have to use the 32.-7. The notebook was a steal at 200.00, it stayed in the box unused for almost the whole 5 years--not a scratch anywhere on it--had time left on the Norton free trial, and ran Adobe Reader 7. I guess HP was sold? and support has become a bit flaky--their real answer is to buy new computers more often, I suppose.

thanks,

Steve

Re: could i have put windows 764 bit on this laptop--hp dv6000 2006 edition, came with xp?

Hi, Steve:

If you know exactly what processor you have in your notebook, I can let you know if you can run a 64 bit OS on your notebook.

For example if it is an Intel processor, it should give a description of it in your system information, for example a T7200.

Just the speed is not good enough to determine.  Some dual core processors are not 64 bit capable such as the core duo T2400.

Re: could i have put windows 764 bit on this laptop--hp dv6000 2006 edition, came with xp?

Hi Paul,

Rating: 3.3: Windows experience: 1.0 to 7.9, scale

The processor is Intel(R) Core (TM) 2-CPU T5500@ 1.66ghz

System type: 32 bit Operating system

2.00 RAM (gbs)

Stickers says intel Cetrino Duo Designed for XP--Vista capable

Graphics Nvidia Gforce go 7400

Light Scribe

Ha ha, if its only able to run Windows 7 32 bit, I won't feel "stupid." But heck, I'm a man, I can take it on the chin!

thanks, Paul,

Steve

Hi, Steve:

You can run W7 64 bit with a T5500.

Here are the specs:

http://ark.intel.com/products/27253/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T5500-(2M-Cache-1_66-GHz-667-MHz-FSB)

Note the instruction set:  64 bit, and then at the bottom--Intel 64 -- Yes

Re: could i have put windows 764 bit on this laptop--hp dv6000 2006 edition, came with xp?

HI Paul,

I forgot to ask you the question: do you have concise good info on the major differences between 32 and 64 bit? Perhaps an article or two that you believe nails down the important issues--I realize new developments will come. Windows 7 32 is a great improvement over XP-- and I have used it in the past at school, and I had a 64 bit 2010 HP G2 notebook, new, that I sold.

Thanks for your patience--I love computers, and owned my first one only 4 years ago and could only push on the power button!

An IT degree would be nice, but I'm studying Social Work at the University of Nevada, Reno.

thanks,

Steve

Re: could i have put windows 764 bit on this laptop--hp dv6000 2006 edition, came with xp?

Hi, Steve:

Here are a few articles.  Basically, unless you have 4 or more GB of memory installed in your notebook, I would not bother to switch.  I doubt your PC can take more than 4 GB of memory.  A 64 bit OS requires more system memory to run. Not twice as much as a 32 bit, but more than a 32 bit needs to run.

http://www.ehow.com/about_6297464_difference-bit-32-bit-systems.html

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946765

That was a good deal on 7 Pro for $29.99.

All you need is to get your hands on the 64 bit download ISO file and you can use your same product key.
