Hi Paul,
Thanks, I will do the research and investigate inserting more RAM (max) in my notebook--I wonder if additional RAM is good anyway, I multi-task my computers often. This desktop I have is almost the same HP as the notebook, HP Media Center Edition (2005) with dual core Intel Pentium D, 2.66 times two ghz, with 4 gbs of RAM (came with 1) I got it free from a friend at church.
I need to figure out how to send you the kudos you deserve!
best regards,
Steve

Hi, Steve.
My suggestion, since you don't know your exact model notebook, is to run the Crucial memory scanner tool and it should tell you how much memory your PC can take and what speed. I am assuming PC2-5300 based on your processor. PC2-6400 will also work if it is cheaper to buy. It will just downclock to the slower 667 MHz speed.

Kudos -- You just click on the white star under my name.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi, Steve:
That is what the product page specs state:
You can install 4 GB of memory (2 x 2GB) of PC2-5300 or PC2-6400 memory if you are running your PC with BIOS version F.25 or newer. Here are the release notes for F.25:
| Fix/Enhancement: | Modifies thermal control method to improve system stability. Fixes issue where a "blue screen" error is generated if the notebook has two 2-GB memory modules installed. |
But...now this is very important!!! Why I put this in red...
If you are not running with BIOS F.25 or newer, now that you have installed Windows 7, you CANNOT update the BIOS!!!
If you attempt to flash the BIOS in Windows 7, you will kill your notebook dead. 100% dead.
You can only run the flash in Vista or XP. No exceptions.
So, yes you can install 4 GB of memory in your PC but only if you have BIOS v F.25 or newer installed.
Paul

Hi Paul,
Interesting. How do I determine if I have the BIOS F.25 or not? Look in system hardware? I'm looking....
Steve Thanks for the red warning--well taken.

Hi, Steve:
Go to your Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information. On that list should be the BIOS version.

Hi paul,
These specs are for model #HP Pavilion dv6174cl and mine is the dv6000. Produt numbers are different too. Are you determining this info because the processors are the same??

Hi, Steve:
You probably do have the dv6174. The product page specs show everything you have in yours right?
I have a dv6700. On the top right of the screen bezel it says dv6000. On the sticker on the bottom with the serial number it says dv6700.
But it really is a dv6810us.
What is your BIOS version? Did you see it listed in the system information window?
Paul
