Hey thanks for the guide. I downgraded to XP 64 before and it broke my system--went back to 7 for awhile, but...back to XP 64 again. Everything is good except those unknown devices ,but I can live with that. My wireless works, but the light stays orange....
When I installed XP 64 before, I still had all of the files from the 'c:\swsetup' directory that came preinstalled with vista on another partition, and used what drivers I could from there. I remember the wireless driver in there worked, but the wireless vista driver on hp.com isn't working... If anyone has the file handy could you drop me a line [text removed for privacy]?
Thanks again.

Mine stays orange too.. doesnt change to blue and sometimes it is confusing.. but not much... also the smart start or whtever the first light next to the power button is does not work either... i guess the solution is upgrade the BIOS...however HP does not support XP anymore.. so if things go worng in flashing the bIOS then the laptop becomes paper weight...

i did successfully follow this forum to downgrade my dv7-1232nr to xp x32, but not x64, and little tought to get all the driver right, but my light change to blue, and either you can use the touch button on screen or by software.
but not sure that is the x64 driver you dl issue, but i use x32 w/4 gig or memory, and i did loose some, becuase xp only see less than 3g.
let me know if you need any driver, i may be able to forward to you.

OK my friend has this laptop, fairly good specs but running like a pig (aka Vista)
I mentioned he would be better off trying to put XP on this laptop. He comes around with a newly eBay'ed XP Pro SP2.
Great I think, a quick backup, format, installation and we're away... that was eight hours ago :-(
I'm no stranger to SATA/AHCI drivers, nor to slipstreaming drivers into Windows installations. However a while ago I got myself a USB Floppy drive to make sure I was slipstreaming the correct driver into the installation in the first place.
Today has been fun... (sarcasm) trying to find the correct driver has been a real pain in the bottom.
Here's a couple of details from the laptop:
Serial Number : nb239ua#aba
Motherboard : Compal 30FC
Chipset : AMD 780G / SB700
Here's a list of the drivers I've tried:
Didn't work:
----------------
32bit_ATI_SB7xx_RAID&AHCI_driver_v9-4_WHQL.rar (118kb-10th Sept 2008)
sp43839.exe (5.23mb-19th May 2009)
sp39719.exe (5.24mb-13th June 2008)
sp37005.exe (787kb-23rd July 2007) * INTEL *
sp42821.exe (5.23mb-11th March 2009)
ATI_SB700_SATA_Slipstream.rar (258kb-4th Aug 2008)
motherboard_driver_sata_amd_bootdisk_7series (248kb-3rd Dec 2007)
sp40046.exe (5.24mb-13th June 2008)
motherboard_driver_sata_amd_bootdisk_m7x_xp.exe (337kb-9th April 2009) * SB750 *
sp32478.exe (602kb) * INTEL *
AMD SATA AHCI Controller Driver (226kb-13th June 2008)
sb700.rar (264kb-10th Sept 2008)
32bit_ATI_SB7xx_RAID&AHCI_driver_v9-4_WHQL (118kb-10th Sept 2008) * ATI 9.4 *
Not tried (missing txtsetup.oem)
--------------------------------------------
ATI_SB700_RAID_Floppy_VITSA_mb (1.04mb-8th July 2009)
W7Vista_121am (28.3mb-19th May 2009) * ECS A780VM-M" *
9-4_xp32-64_sb (3.62mb-9th July 2008)
11-1_xp32-64_raid (67.3mb-14th Oct 2010) * SM6/7xxx *
ATI_SB700_RAID_Floppy_VITSA_mb (1.01mb-8th July 2009)
Couldn't find driver files:
--------------------------------
11-1_xp32-64_sb (17.5mb)
Almost worked
--------------------
ATI_SB8xx_RAID_mb(1.15mb-13th Nov 2009) * SEE NOTE A *
11-1_xp32-64_raid (67.3mb-14th Oct 2010) * SM8xxx * SEE NOTE B *
* NOTE A * Installation gets passed "Setup is Starting Windows" onto the next screen for a second then whole laptop just powers down unexpectedly?
*NOTE B * Installation starts copying files across, it then randomly powers down whilst copying installation files across.
If anybody can advise me of the exact file I should be using to save me a bit of time and effort tomorrow I'll certainly be appreciative!

Have you tried slipstreamingthis driver(sp42821) with nlite which seems to work for most posters in this thread?Us 7Zip to extract it to a folder.
Or try the attached file.

Thanks for the info CherlyG, yeah I could try slipstreaming that driver into a Windows installation, but quite honestly if it doesn't work using my USB FDD then I'm not going to spend the time doing the slipstreaming process for a 'it may work' suggestion.
The second driver driver you mentioned didn't work, and doing that took nearly an hour!
Anymore suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

It is user choice, of course. But_I have seen several succeed with slipstream method using same driver that failed using fdd.

honestly, it totally work fine for me, i can confirm that i did get help from this forum and successfully down grade my vista to xp and got all driver working fine for me, but it only last for like year and find out and experience that xp really got all the juicy out of the battery, and if i run the battery itself to power up the laptop and it didn't run that long, also if i don't charge it and somehow battery gone faster if i leave it off the charger for couple days.
finaly got upgrade to win7, i don't like the interface but battery life got improve, really all depend on your choice and i did agree with cherylg
