error "unable to take required system restore point" when trying to run my norton registry clean up
i have a pavilion dv7 2040us
with vista premium 64bit

Well im id say the problem is with norton, in the past i have used norton and it is the worst reasource/memory hog and terrible in a system.
2 im assuming Vista is blocking proctected core system files from norton.

Do you have system restore disabled? You may want to enable it if it's disabled.
As for Norton, they were once known for being incredibly bloated with the AV software, but starting with version 2008 or 2009, they really cleaned up, so I wouldn't automatically assume this is a Norton issue.

nada to having restore disabled. norton said it was microsoft & microsoft said it was norton, go figure! getting tired of the many problems w/hp. thanks for trying though.............

It's not really a problem (unless you want it to be). Don't run the registry cleaner.
