how important are updates?

Are system updates i.e. new support driver versions and system bios update really that important if my notebook is running fine? im a bit uneasy about installing /updating them, a bit afraid they might cause irregularities that i dont experience at this point in time.

any suggestions guys?  Thanks in advance?

Re: how important are updates?

Hi,

For general updates to drivers and software, I would agree with your approach  - if everythings working well, why bother updating.  The only exception to this would be if the update corrects a security flaw.

Regarding bios updates, I would only ever apply one of these if the update corrected an error I was experiencing or added functionality that I needed.  This type of update has the potential to 'brick' your PC if it goes wrong and unlike a corrupt operating system, you can't simply reload it - you won't have to search the forum for long to find posts about PCs that have been turned into expensive paper weights as the result of a bios flash going wrong.

Regards,
