The computer when it is turned on, goes to the black screen that gives me the chose of the Safe mode or normal. It doesn't matter which one I pick, it just goes to a grey screen then freezes.
I rebooted it using the F2 key and it went into a system tune-up. It aloud me to run that, with the results being
Memory test: Passed
Smart check
assed
Short DST: Failed
Failure Id: Q3030K-62M65D-MFPX01-60R003
Product Id: A7A41UA#ABA
Hard Disk 1

It means the hard drive has failed. You can replace it with a retail hard drive, or if you are still within warranty contact HP Support for a replacement.800-474-6836
If you haven't burned your Recovery Disks, you will need them to reinstall your software on a new hard drive. You can order them from your Support page HERE or by phone .

Where and how do I get a new hard drive? What am I looking for?
I thought the operating system was stored on the D drive and you could restore without disks.
I'm so confused.

The OS reinstall files are on the D drive. However, the D drive is on the hard drive and when it fails all files are gone with it. That is why you should always burn an OS Recovery Disk set.
You need a 2.5" SATA laptop hard drive, such as>>HERE or HERE
