install windows XP on HP Probook 4530s

Dear all,

I Need to install windows XP in HP Probook 4530s. but there is an error while installation. Error occur from the very start point of installation.Blue screen comes when windows setup load drivers and going to start setup. Please help me if some one know about this matter.

Hi, Scott:

The details in your notebook's service manual regarding the BIOS settings leaves much to be desired.

Go into your BIOS and find a setting (normally in the advanced menu) to change your SATA Mode to Disabled if it is set to enabled, or IDE if it is set to ACHI.

Save the setting there and then when you exit the BIOS.

XP will now install.

Before you blow away your Windows 7 installation, please click on your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section in the device manager and let me know what the name of your SATA ACHI controller is.

After you install XP, you will want to change your BIOS setting back to Enabled or ACHI and you can't do that until you load the driver for that device.

I will give you the step by step instructions to load that driver once you provide that info.

The first driver you should install before any other is the chipset driver, followed by the graphics driver, followed by the audio driver.

You would be wise to vist your device manager and write down the names (models) of all the major hardware components (video, audio, network) now so you can easily install the drivers once you install XP.

thanks for the valuable reply. The detail in the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section in the device manage is 

ATA Channel 0

Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller

when i click on the properties of "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller" then following details appear: 

Device Type :  IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

Manufacturer : Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller

Location :  PCI bus 0, device 31, function 2

Hi, Scott:

Based on the info you posted and the info I could find on the chipset in your notebook, I believe you have the Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.

I'll assume that you now have XP loaded after changing the BIOS setting and that you installed the chipset driver at the link below already.  If not please do so now and reboot.

Now, go to the Intel site below and download and extract the second file (32 bit download) listed into a folder you name and remember where you saved it to, so you can browse to it.

Now that you have done those two things, now it is time to install the ACHI driver so you can change that BIOS setting back to the default for optimum HDD efficiency.

• Right click the My Computer icon, click Manage , select Device Manager .
• Click the + symbol beside IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers , this would show the devices under this category.
• You will find the storage controller driver installed.
• Right click on the Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller and click Update Driver .
  In Welcome to the Hardware Update Wizard , select No , not this time. Click Next .
• Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced). Click Next .
• Select Don't search I will choose the driver to install . Click Next .
• Click Have Disk .
• Click Browse .
• Select the location you extracted the drivers to.  Select iaAHCI.inf .
• Click Open .
• This will list several SATA AHCI Controllers. From this list, select the Intel®) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller . Click Next .
• The Update Driver Warning will be shown. Click Yes .
• The driver will install, and completing the Hardware update Wizard appears. Click Finish .
• You should now find the updated controller in the device manager.
• During restart, press the F10 key and boot to BIOS setup utility, change SATA Device Mode to AHCI .

That should do it.

If you need any further assistance toward finding missing hardware drivers, please post back with the Hardware ID's for each missing device.  They can be found by clicking on each device in the device manager. Then click on the details tab.

Post the top string of characters you see. Those will identify the type and model of the missing devices and I can send you the links to the drivers.

I'm replying to a rather old post, but this is exactly the same problem I'm having, and I need help. Are you still around to help? I just bought my probook4530s yesterday, and last night I managed to install XP by following the directions you gave in your first post on the subject, but I'm having problems with your second post (which is the important one).

Basically, the info in your first post allowed me to stop the blue screen during the XP installation, but now that its complete, I'd like to switch the drive mode to take advantage of the drives capabilities, but I'm stuck leaving it as IDE for now because it consistently blue screens in the middle of the boot if I try to switch it back in BIOS to the other mode.

The main problem is that the link you gave:

doesn't appear to work. Of course in the form I have it above with the "..." it won't work, but that's not the problem in your posting, because it is properly expanded there, but it says page not found.

Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 2 port Serial ATA Storage Controller - 1C09
Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller - 1C01
Primary IDE Channel
Primary IDE Channel

Is this duplication normal and is the list correct? I don't even know if I've installed the correct driver. Can you help?

Just follow the instructions I posted above and select the Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller from the list.

Update the 4 port controller, not the 2 port one.

The duplication will go away after you install the driver, I believe.

Since I was here, I updated my instructions to include the name of the controller to update and the link to the Intel drivers.

If you need additional assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Okay, so far so good, but it looks like I can't change the driver from windows since the drive is not in the correct mode, and I can't set it in the correct mode before booting, because it blue screens unless the driver is installed ... i.e. its a catch 22 ...

Now the read.me file suggests that DURRING Xp installation, I can hit F6 then load the driver off of a floppy (well, USB key), however that would have to be done durring instalation of XP. If I go back to the install CD this will work, but I'm a bit fearful because I spent a day restoring and installing all my programs and data files, so I don't want to start over from scratch.

What do I do ... boot from CD just to get as far as the F6 prompt to install the driver, then take the CD out and reboot? 'any ideas?

I do not think I am understanding you...

You installed the chipset driver which is why you see the names of the 2 and 4 port controllers.

You downloaded the AHCI driver files and extracted them to a folder.

You went to the device manager and you right click on the 4 Port Serial ATA Controller.

You click on the driver tab, click on update driver. Select install from a specific location and click the Have disk.

You now browse to the folder you extracted the drivers to and you will see this list:

You select this one I bolded (scroll up or down if you don't see it in the window initially).

The driver will install and ask you to restart the PC.

You restart the PC and then you hit the F10 key to get into the BIOS.  DO NOT let the PC try to go into windows or it will blue screen. You need to change the BIOS setting to AHCI, save the setting, reboot and then it will boot into windows and finish installing the AHCI controller and you will need to reboot again.

If you start from scratch, you can indeed have the BIOS setting to AHCI and hit the F6 key and then select the above driver by using the up/down arrow keys to scroll to and select that driver.

The only thing is you can only use a USB FDD. No other medium (CD, flash drive, etc.) will work.  Windows XP will only recognize a FDD to install the sata driver at the F6 prompt.

You will have to reload XP in its entirety.  You won't be able to do things half measure.
