is recovering data after updating vista to windows 7 is possible

Recently , my Hp compaq presario C700 which was installed with vista got crashed and i updated tht with windows 7, now my question is can i get the data on c: driver , also i have seen a folder named windows.old is created in c drive . 

plz help me.
