Presario CQ71-140EA.
Windows 7 professional.
When I attempt to use HP support Assistant; the screen opens and across the top it says" an error occured" and I am then unable to use the HP support assistant.
I downloaded another version from the download site; however upon attempting to install the file an error message said that a later version is installed, installation aborted.
I attempted to uninstall the support assistant; but it does not appear in the list of installed programs in the programs and features list.
There does not appear to be an "uninstall file" in the program files for HP program files.
Could you offer a solution please.

Hi,
Try the following.
Unless you still have the installer, download the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the page on the link below - the download links are towards the bottom of the page - and save the installer to your Downloads folder.
http://h18021.www1.hp.com/helpandsupport/hp-suppor
Next, if you don't have an extraction utility installed, download and install 7-Zip. Please note, if you have a 64bit installation, download and install the .msi 64-bit x64installer on the link below.
Next, right click the HPSA installer you download earlier, select 7-Zip, select extract files and then click Ok. Open the newly extracted folder, right click on UninstallHPTCA and select 'Run as Administrator' - you may well see no progress of this attempted uninstallation, so leave the notebook to idle for a good 10 minutes before restarting it.
When Windows has fully reloaded, run the Microsoft 'Fixit' on the link below before trying to install the new version of HPSA..

Dean,
Thank you for the prompt reply to my enquiry.
The process that you suggested, eventually enabled me to find a solution to the problem.
The HP Support Assistant file; from the web site was a .exe file: SP54620.EXE, not a zip file.
Therefore the 7-zip file was uneccessary, although I had downloaded the file.
I ran the "microsoft fix it" software, but it did not identify any problems with HP support assistant!.
When I ran SP 54620.EXE as administrator, it said the file existed; which I then overwrote.
I found an uninstall file in C
wSetup, SP54620.EXE. UninstallHPSA, (not HPTCA)!
I ran UninstallHPSA, as administrator, and then did a restart.
I was then able to reinstall the HP Support Assistant, and it works OK.
Very many thanks for your support and assistance, it was most helpful, putting me in the right direction.

I was working on my computer last night and saw a window flash up briefly, it was a notepad screen.. it said "copied".. so Iinstantly turned my wireless off. After turning it back on it was clear the HP Office Assistant was doing something whe it was disconnected from the internet. Now I cannot get the darn thing to move past whatever it was doing. It contines to want to restart my computer, te restart window is the only window that will come up when I try to open the HP Assitant and my computer has been restarted many times- it just won't clear this issue.... any ideas what I can do here?
