unwanted updates

[VLR]

I have a laptop G62 and keep getting a shield on the bottom bar which wants me to download jucheck.exe.  It states it is from an unknown publisher, file origin is hard drive on this computer.  I am dubious about okaying this as I have no idea if it is safe or not, and what are they offering to download.  Does anyone know if it is safe, what it does, and why it comes separately from my auto updates?  I have clicked on the no button lots of times, but it keeps coming back. Thanking you in advance.  Yours desperately, VLR 19/03/2011

jucheck.exe is completely safe .

It is just a bit of a irritant because it wants to update so frequently. It comes from the Java Updater at Sun. Everyone has java on their PC/notebook. The updater is just a necessary evil unless you are a hardcore java programmer.

Sorry, but I can't agree with you. It is recommended to always use latest version of Java.

For example latest version (6u24) is with critical security update.

Oracle highly recommend to install it.

How to update Java?

You should uninstall old version first and then install latest.

I can't agree with you again and I do understand what you were trying to say. 

From this what I know Java programmers like Java Development Kit (JDK).

Java Runtime Enviroment (JRE , Standard Edition) is for regular users - this software is installed on VLR notebook.
