After multiple attempts to install Ubuntu over Windows ME, I finally noticed the message the BIOS failed. I made a recovery floppy and formatted the hard drive. Coincidently the WIFI card failed. I copied the BIOS update both a CD and a thumb drive.
Neither would install. The only OS I have that would install from the optical drive is **bleep** Small Linux.
Is it possible to install the BIOS update from the A: prompt or by manipulation of the DSL OS or access the thumb drive?
Thanks.

You should be able to make a bootable floppy and update the bios by boot from it:
I am an HP employee.

Step 2 of the recommended instructions require a temporary download to the hard drive. To update the BIOS, is it possible to substitute the download of those temporary files to a CD? The computer I have with internet connection, and a floppy drive is the Compaq nc6000, with Ubuntu 10.10. Thanks.
