up-graded am to 8 gig only 3.74 is showing as usable Hp pavilion dv7 AMD 64 bit showing 8 gig in showing bios and system no option bto change this or change ramping have tried everything no one can seem to fix this I am sure HP knows what the problem is.

HI,

It is not clear in the way you have stated your notebook's specifications as to whether or not a 64-bit operating system is installed. If the installed operating system is Windows 32-bit, then the 3.74 GB is about normal.

 

I suggest that you run the memory diagnostic in the BIOS to see if one of the memory modules is faulty. That is indeed  one of the other possibilities. Did you replace both modules or only one module? Replacing only one memory module with one that is not identical can also cause the issue you are seeing.
