Your laptop came with 2 gb of memory so I would install 32bit OS. Since you are buying a disk why not just go with>> Windows 7
Or, you might want to phone HP to see if Recovery Disks are still available for your laptop, usually less than $20.>> Contact HP

Hi,
You need to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32 Bit as per the product specifications of your notebook.
As there is no online ordering option to get the recovery disks for your notebook, so in this case you can call HP Technical Support and check if they can still provide you the recovery disks. Otherwise you'll have to install a retail version of windows vista.

Hi,
Yes, Windows 7 is much better than Vista. It is more stable and uses less system resources than Windows Vista. Just check in microsoft website if your system meets the requirements to install Windows 7. As you were able to install it so the BSOD should be driver related.

I upgraded my DV281US from Vista to Windows 7 soon after it was released, no problems.
