I was forced to reload the system. I don't have the original software so I used a copy of home edition from a friend.
The system loaded but I can't get the license key installed.

Hi, Thomas:
With Windows XP, you have to use the same type of installation disk as the key is for.
For example, you need an XP Home OEM installation disk in order for your product key to be accepted.
If the disk you borrowed is an XP Home full retail disk, or an XP Home upgrade disk, your key will not work when using one of those kinds of disks.
If you can get your hands on a Dell XP Home reinstallation disk, you can use your product key to activate the installation.
If you can't get anything to work, you can order a set of recovery disks for your notebook at the link below.

Paul, thanks but as this machine is destined for a young child I wasn't planning on spending money to make it work again.

You're very welcome.
Then you will need to come up with an XP Home OEM installation disk in order to make the notebook work at no cost.

Unfortunately, no.
You used to be able to get Dell XP Home OEM reinstallation disks on eBay a dime a dozen.
Now they are scarce and expensive, because XP is no longer being installed on home PC's.
Your best bet is to see if any of your friends or acquaintances have any Dell PC's with XP Home, and see if you can borrow their reinstallation disk.
Unlike HP, Dell supplies the reinstallation disks with their PC's.
