windows update service is not running. cannot update computer

Using mini 110-1134cl with win7 starter. Haven't used it for a month. Wanted to make sure system had updates but was unable because windows update service is not running. Tried windows fix-it troubleshooter but still not able to find if system is up to date. Now what?

What type of problem you get? Are there any error messages you encountered?

HP dm1 works great with SSD..

No error message as such. When I go to update page and click to update, message comes back that windows update service is not running, may have to reboot to start. When rebooted, same thing occurs.
