Can I set up a 5.1 surround with the headphone output? I've got everything connected to the headphone output but it doens't seem to work very well.

Great Question!

 

 

The output on the notebook is 2.0 unless specified.

 

 Most 5.1 headphones make a virual surround sound experience unless they require multiple mini jack inputs, optical, or coaxal.

 

The only way to experience true 5.1 on a notebook is to have an internal 5.1 card (which is not included in current HP notebooks) or purchase an external to plug in (USB or ExpressCard).
