I have a HP DV7-2170us laptop. I never had this problem before but lately whenever I launch a game or at any other random point while sound is playing I hear a sharp and disruptive BEEP. At first I thought it was some sound setting in Control Panel that is assigned to some event but I've gone through all of the system sounds and not a single one sounds like this loud and obnoxious beep that I'm hearing every time I launch a game. It's just a single beep, but sometimes a second beep happens in quick succession. It sounds like a piano beep. Occassionally,when a few of these beeps occur, the system freezes completely, which is unacceptableas far as I'm concerned. This laptop is brand new, just over a month old. I am in the middle of Africa right now so sending the laptop in for repairs is out of the question.
Thing's I've tried to resolve this issue:
- Removing the IDT audio drivers and re-installing them from drivers obtained at the HP site.
No success as of yet. Anybody else encountered this issue? Even if your laptop model isn't the same and you have a resolution, I'd be willing to try it out.

I contacted HP support regarding this issue and what was initially suggested was to just backup all of my data and restore the drive to factory defaults. After some volley back and forth they eventually suggested performing the following:
===========
[Wednesday, November 25, 2009 10:53 AM] -- SYED ZAFFER H says:
Step1:
Please disconnect the power cable and AC adapter from the notebook and from the wall outlet as well.
Please turn the notebook upside down. You will find a latch, press and move the latch to the extreme end and battery will pop-out. Remove the battery slowly.
Now press and hold the power button for 2– 3 Minutes.
Connect the power cable and AC adapter.
Step2:
1.Please power ON the notebook, Keep tapping F10 as soon as you power it ON.
2.Press the F9 key to reset the BIOS defaults, it will ask to restore defaults. Hit Yes.
3.Press F10 and save the changes.
4.Replace the battery as you have removed it.
Step3:
Please downlaod this file on the notebook and instal the file. It is BIOS update, it will update the file the notebook will flash and shut down.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45501-46000/sp45955
Power ON the notebook.
Step4: Also install this updated chipset drivers
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41501-42000/sp41903
Step5 : Audio drivers
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp43501-44000/sp43935
========
I've done this, the beeping is still occuring whenever the audio driver is 'activated' or turned on. Is ANYBODY else experiencing this issue?

Sound like hardware warning from BIOS beep.
Check your temp with HWmonitor and post your temps

Thing is, the beeping only occurs when the 'sound subsystem' is activated or when loading a game. Even whilst playing a game after hours on end, I don't hear the beep. It's only when an application or game needs to use the sound card that I hear the beep. Two beeps in some cases.

Solved! I thought it only fair to share my solution.
I installed Vista SP2, end of problem. Weird huh.

If it is hardware issue, it will happen again.

You're right, it started happening again. Must be a hardware issue. The laptop now also locks up once a day at least. I'm going to create a new thread about it and see what can be done.

I have a HP DV7-3112ea (not to be quoted on but..) ive been having the same beeping issue for a while. ive run alot of test to remove the problem having previously worked fixing pcs and laptops in a shop. convinced it was an overheating issue i even mounted in on a cooling rack, but its still an issue. this has become a serious problem for me as i acutly only purchased this laptop to run a rig at concerts. i was about to try reinstalling windows and then factory settings & bios so youve saved me about a day of hardship saying it didnt work in that post XD . basicly im also out of solutions but i can tell you its certinaly a hardware issue. personaly i think my next move will be picking up the phone and shouting at someone who works for hp
