When I first got the laptop I had the same problem, beats sounded terrible however I've been messing around with settings and found that it now sounds awesome and I couldn't be happier. Here are my settings:
First you need to go to beats audio control panel-advanced settings and launch windows sound properties, go under properties under speakers and headphones. Under levels make sure Mono is not muted, this is your subwoofer. Under Enhancements make sure Bass Boost is checked go under settings make sure frequency is set to 50hz with +6 Db. boost, make sure to also check Virtual surround and Loudness Equalization(both can be left at default settings). Next go under tone control and make sure it is set to 0 for both Bass and Treble. Under advanced make sure you have your audio set to Bit 96000Hz. Make sure you hit apply to finalize changes. Ok, not its time to go into the beats audio control panel again but this time go under "Listening Experience" leave beats audio setting at music and move over to the graphic Equalizer. Now go under custom and use these settings from left to right (Make sure to hit save when you're done). I use win amp for listening to mp3s/cds and it sounds great, I'm sure any other player will sound just as good. . I hope this helps.

I had similar frustrations with the lack of fidelity with the beats audio and a dv7. In my case it is a pair of klipsch earbuds. I finally found the beats audio control panel and under "listening experience" found that I needed to turn it on, so to speak. I checked the beats audio box, and immediately the ear buds were full fidelity. And messing about with the settings and graphic equalizer found some nice settings that work well for me.
Well, the internal speakers are limited by their size. But as laptops go, mine seem to work pretty well. Actually, I returned a previous laptop because it had a maximum volumn setting that I still could not hear. I replaced it with the dv7 and am reasonably happy with it.
Overall, I find the dv7 to be a great laptop. A bit large, a bit heavy, but the screen is outstanding, and the audio is pretty good. I wish the audio control panel was easier to find, but I have pinned mine to the task bar and so it is now easy to tweak.

i see the thread got off track a bit, but i am having the same problem as the OP except mine is most noticable through the headphone jack.
The same tracks in the same software with the same headphones sounds gorgeous on other computers, but has awful, awkward level adjustments on my envy15. (ex. solo vocals sound good but get supressed and muffled when instruments cut in)
i have also tried all of the same things as OP
using internal speakers, high quality denon and low quality sony headphones
various softwares (itunes, WMP) all with high quality (320kbps) tracks
uninstalling/reinstalling drivers
adjusting and toggling enhancments
adjusting beats EQs
turning off beats alltogether (fn+b)
adjusting bass/treble levels
i have chatted with a couple "support technicians" and sent a few emails, but all i get are instructions to "reinstall drivers" or "try other beats eqs"
also frustrating because i noticed OP is from 2010, this is a new laptop as of 2012 and is still having problem.

Not sure how or why this worked, but i found a solution, for me at least. (envy 15t-3000)
so i tried countless times uninstalling the drivers form the device manager, and either letting hp recovery manager replace them, or downloading them from my notebooks driver page on hp.com. all of these attempts changed nothing, same volume swings and compression effect.
but on a whim, i simply uninstalled the drivers, refreshed the list, and let windows find and install drivers. the drivers seem to be the same version (6.10.6359.0), default settings within beats are the same, and all control panel sound settings are the same, but all of the issues are gone.
Music sounds beautiful and unaltered, the way it should be.
hopefully this will work with all of hps beats laptops. Good luck!
(also, another tip to make your sound better, re zero your bass and treble in your sound devices properties, beats maxes them both and washes out some of the sound. adjusting sample rate and bit depth in the advanced tab also helps a little)

The above post has good information. This worked for me on my DM1-4010.
Here's what I think is going on. The IDT audio (which is still the underlying hardware), has a bunch of effects that can be applied. SRS Surround is one of them, and I'm pretty sure that is enabled by default. Since we have the Beats Audio control panel on our machines, you can't get to the normal IDT control panel that has those controls. I think uninstalling/reinstalling disables those enhancements.

Bought a DV7-6165us, thought I was having a problem with the audio appearing to "auto volume-level" itself just as the OP stated. I found out this was a problem with WMP 12! It doesn't matter wether I use the *32 or *64-bit editions on x64 setup (and yes, you can switch them to run seperately).
I tried using ANY other media player: Frostwire, RealPlayer, some other generic players... this problem is completely gone. In fact, the sound gets so loud, the hard-drive must vibrate so hard that it locks because the playback will actually temporarily pause.
I hate not being able to use WMP because to me it has just the right customization options for free but I just thought I'd share that.
