HP BIOS update, no sound now?

I have an HP Pavilion dm4 that I bought last summer, but I'm not sure which model #s specifically comes after that.

I just updated my HP BIOS and now I am not getting any sound from the speakers or through headphones, this has happened before though I admittedly cannot remember what the solution was. Please help!

Also I am kind of computer-challeneged when it comes to things like this, if you could include step by step instructions in your solutions that would be great! please & thanks!

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

go to start> type hp support assistant in the search field > select hp support assistant from the search list> click on yes if pc ask you if you want to allow program to make changes on your pc>on the main window of hp support assistant click on maintain tab> if it says no action required, click the refresh button at the upper left of the HPSA> put on a check mark on the sound driver and click apply. :smileyhappy:

If that did not work run system restore.

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

Hi

You have a couple of options as I see it.

Please First check if the speaker icon on the unit is not muted.

Go to device manager and uninstall the driver and restart and unit will install the driver automatically.

Try doing System restore to the date when the unit was working fine.

Try to update the driver from hp.com website.

Let us know how it goes!

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

It's definitely not muted!

I tried a system restore from before the update was made (and I was listening to Spotify, so the speakers worked fine) and it still doesn't work. I don't know which drivers to uninstall, and I don't know how to find the update on hp.com

Like I said...computer challenged... =/

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

Sounds like somebody screwed up with the BIOS update.  I lost my sound, too.

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

I just turned my computer back on after leaving for a few hours, and now the sound works again. Don't know what happened between now and then, but I'm not complaining. Thanks for everyones advice, looks like the system restore did work!

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

I don't think that the system restore made any difference.  I had the same problem with a BIOS upgrade to v. 14 on my dm4.  Tried everything!  Finally, I found that all I had to do was completely power off the computer then turn it back on.  Exact same thing happened after I upgraded to v. 15.  HP should include this information on the BIOS upgrade page.

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

[ Edited ]

I just downloaded a BIOS update onto my HP Pavilion g7-1310us Notebook PC.

An HP Remote Support tech said BIOS update might fix the whistling noise coming from my fan. Instead it cut off my sound. Still did not fix the whistling noise.

Second HP tech said try system restore. Did not fix sound or whistling noise from fan.

Third HP tech said download sound driver update. I did that. Sound still did not return. Still have whistling sound from fan.

Fourth HP tech helped me with sound settings. I can now hear sound fine when the headphones are unplugged, but not when they are plugged in. The headphones were working fine before I installed the new BIOS update.

Whistling sound from fan still present.

Fourth tech said must be a headphone issue or I should send computer to HP repair center. Could not believe that I would be told to contact headphone manufacturer -- brand-new headphones! -- or send brand-new computer to repair center when they couldn't offer fix for whistling noise of fan and the BIOS update they suggested killed the headphone sound.

So, yes it is the BIOS update that killed the sound.

Re: HP BIOS update, no sound now?

I'm assuming that you have powered off the computer then turned it back on.  I have had the same problem with two BIOS updates.  During the updates, the process performed soft reboots and afterwards the sound was gone.  When I powered off the computer (hard reboot), the sound returned.
