I pre-ordered this computer before it was released on Thursday of last week. I noticed on Saturday that the microphone was completely inaudible due to a massive amount of static that drowns out the voice. I called HP and we discussed the issue over the phone and after letting the representative hear the recorded sound, he suggested that I return the laptop to Futureshop and get a replacement.
I picked up my replacement today, and to my horror, the microphone issue still exists. The sound driver has been uninstalled and re-installed, it has been updated, and the microphone boost has been tried at all levels.
I'm desperate for some help.
Thank you.
(PS: The laptop is Windows 7 with Coexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio)

I have a new Hp G60-535DX whose mic is also very bad...static, breakups, just extremely bad quality. I spent 3 hours with HP support who ended up crashing my computer and i lost over 100 hours of downloads and fine tuning of views and settings. Now they also want me to sent it in for repairs. they say it will take about a month unless i want to pay express fees. i'm afraid i'll end up like you. worse yet I don't have a second working computer. Has this poster found a solution, hs anyone else. I'm thinking maybe i should take it to best buy and get my money back.

I would suggest that you take it back and get another laptop with the same or similar specs for the same price.
I took back my HP and received a replacement of the same model. I then found out that the microphone issues were also present on that replacement as well. I then took it back and got a Sony Vaio for the same price $699 at Futureshop.
The microphone is amazingly clear, the sound is great, and I am very happy. I will never buy HP products again. =)

tallulah,
Try these steps:
Click Start , Control Panel , Hardware and Sound , Sound , and then select the Recording tab .
Right-click on appropriate internal microphone audio device and select Properties .
Select the Listen tab and then deselect Listen to this device .

This is what got me excellent recording sound on microphone of G60-945DX:
1. Go to control panel /hardware and sound /sound/recording/mic/ properties/advanced
change settings to last one which is 2channel 24 bit, 96000hz studio quality.
Uncheck EVERYTHING on the advanced window
2. When in SKYPE go to Call/audio settings
Uncheck automatically adjust audio settings and move recording level to middle between min and max
Save and make a test call
Enjoy

I'm so frustrated with this. I've tried all the above suggestions... nothing seems to work. It's has so much static you can hardly hear anything. I've tried with and without boost, quality is set to max (96K Hz studio 24 bit), tried with and without audio enhancements, made sure "listen to this device" was unchecked, updated the driver, played with different settings in the Smart Audio app.... nothing. It sucks.
