Hmmmm .... I just tried to buy one of those. The shipping cost is extortionate:
Subtotal: $7.95 Shipping Charge: + $164.07 Order Total: $172.02
Bummer! ![]()

thanks to wheelnut for the info...
Does the polarity of the mic connection matter? ie, if i cutoff the mic jack of a cheap headset,
does it matter which of the 2 mic wires i connect to the "body" and which to the "ring" of the 4-part-jack?
isnt it amazing how stupid a supposed top-quality manufacturer like HP can be to
(1) choose this weird design
(2) not supply an adaptor
(3) deny the problem and alienate all customers
???
note: my friend has a samesized Acer Aspire which smartly uses two separate standard connections.

more issues:
it seems when i just use earphones in the external connection,
the netbook speakers are disconnected
but _not_ the internal mic ?
so, i presume that the internal mic will still be active even with our 4-part adaptor?
i am guessing this will negatively affect the quality of mic input, with both internal and external mics active?
it seems then that the 'best' 'solution' is to use a USB-ported headset.
i get very good quality from mine on skype.
PS: also i want to add to my rant against HP, a rant against the several PC-Magazine 'product reviews'
that i read prior to buying the HP Mini ... none of which mentioned this problem ... reinforcing my suspicion
that such reviews are seldom truely objective, independent of the big mfg, nor thorough...

Yes it does matter. These microphones need a bias voltage applied with the correct polarity. If you refer to my diagram, you will see that the Tip of the Microphone Plug must be connected to the Body of the 4-Pole Jack.

Have you tried this headset?
This has the TRRS support for both audio listening as well as mic usage...
Style may not be as you like, but might work?

Was in the process of buying a Mini 210 when I noticed the single in/out port. Shop assistant knew nothing, could not provide a headset to use with it, could not even suggest how to find out. Have called HP Support where the nice lady claimed that she "had never heard of this problem" and suggested "I just use ordinary headphones". Did not even know whether the headsets that HP sell have one or two jacks! Having now read the posts on this subject I have to say that my previously high opinion of HP has hit the floor. Cannot believe that they can build and sell an otherwise ideal product with such a fundamental problem and NO backup to help buyers. Time to check out the competition.

If there are still people out there still trying to solve the stupid problem of the Netbook Combi combi socket have a look at this site:
http://www.astrogaming.co.uk/accessories/3rd-party
I bought one of these for £5.99 and the problem went away. Just a shame tht HP seemed to take us through the hoops to get to this and a shame that they cannot recognise the problem and sell (or give) these to netbook customers.
Happy skyping to all
