Hi, just adding to the list of people who have this issue. I've had the "no sound" problem for 99% of the time in the last 3 months. i've tried the whole driver re-install, roll back, factory install, trial&error regirmorale with little success, short of the "baking" idea i've read in past posts. i'm inclined to believe it is a hardware issue and may just buy a cheap sound card until my Dv2500 finally kicks the bucket.
I must say i've lost my faith in HP and will be looking elsewhere in a future computer.

Hi,
I lent my HP Presario V6500 to my son about a year ago he told me that some time ago the sound would intermittently not work. I got it back from him and discovered the issues described on this site e.g.. 'no audio device is installed' and 'audio, video and game controllers' not displayed in device manager. So I did the usual, a factory image install etc which was back to Vista because I had upgraded to W7. Needless to say there was no sound and nothing in device manager. Also prior to this I had lost the DVD drive however that is back now?? So having realised that it seems there is nothing to be done other than a new main board or an external usb sound device I thought I would give the remove battery/power lead and keep finger on the power button for a minute or so. To my surprise it worked!! So I thought I would restart to see if it still worked - you've guessed it - the same problem 1, nothing in device manager and 2 no audio device installed with the red cross over the speaker. So as I was about to throw it out of the window I tried it again (remove the battery thing) and it resolved the issue I have sound and its in device manager. So suspect that this only might work for some laptops so I'm not going to keep testing this but as a short term fix you might want to try it......

This has been going on for me for over a month! Slowly, things are disappearing. First the sound, then my built in camera, and at some point, my disc drive. IT ALL STARTED WHEN MY COMP RAN WINDOWS UPDATES! I cannot believe that after over 2 years of people posting, calling, and emailing about this problem that there still is not a fix.
HP and WINDOWS- never, ever, ever again (with my hand over my heart) will I EVER buy another of your products and I will warn anyone any chance I get to also not buy your products. I can't wait til I can afford to get rid of this totally useless piece of crap that has done nothing but cost me countless hours of frustration and stress.

Yeah me too. My dvd drive quit about a year ago. HP's are a bunch of junk! This was the first and last thing I ever buy with the HP/Compaq logo!
