This information entered below is a post from GUSTEAU at the MS TechNet users forum on this same problem. It seems to work. I have HP Pavilion Vista QuickTouch Conexant HD Audio driver. This has been messed up for days.
Just followed the instructions below and working. Still working!
Good Luck.
**************************************************
I had the same issue.
The new driver is in c:\swtools\drivers\audioc\[V32/V64 depending on your system]
it is called uiu32a
just copied it to C:\Program Files\CONEXANT\CNXT_HDAUDIO.
Bingo!! Good luck. Sounds unbelievable this has been going on for so long.
a+.
Gusteau.

Hi Everybody I gonne get a guitar and let me tell y´ll mi history
I have a 3 years old Pavilion dv2620 "entertainment PC" laptop with Conexant High Definition audio
One day like three months ago, I try to listen to music while working and I realize that there was a red cross over the speaker simbol, when I hoover the pointer it says " NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED".
My first reaction was shock, then I restart the computer and voila my audio was back, after a month it happens again so I restart it again but with no use this time so I turn it off unplug the power cord took the battery out and press the power button for at least a minute, I but everuthing together turn in on and voila my audio was back, for a while.
Then it happened again I try mi last method and itt didn´t work, so Id did my homework and look on a myriad of web sites about this porblem try some solutions and nothing works.
I contact HP over the chat, while I was following the instructions of the tehcnician, the connection was slow some times and that guy keep telling me "Please answer faster, I´m trying to help you, you are not cooperating with me" , at the end he told me that I have to restore my pc to the original settings, deleting all information and programs in the process and that the only advice that he can give me because my laptop is out of guarantee or if I want to pay or send the computer for service.
Well I didn´t restore my pc, but I tried Microsoft instead so I call the customer service for vista, the technician installed a remote program that allow microsoft to know what´s wrong with you computer and he said that the problem is the hardware and probably my soundcard is broken, his suggestion was either send the computer for a major service so they can replace the borken soundcard or buy USB speakers.
Then I try again to download all the driver for my sound card I even got a windows update with that driver and yes it works, for a while, the sound had been fine for a week today I wake turn on my laptop and yeessss that $·%$··((&/% red cross was ther again.
Conclussions
I´m still without sound in my very Own "entertainment pc" o yeah How entertaining is a PC without sound?
There area lot of temporary solutions they can work from everything like one day to 3 months, but eventually they will fail
There no use in restore the computer I read a lot of post of people that have done that at it didn´t work
Drivers update also is futile
The flash solution is the same
Microsoft and HP are not helping Us, it seems like they don´t care.
There is a 100 % chance that this will be my last Hp pc and at least a 60 % chance that if google Chrome OS work well I will buy a Toshiba Chrome powered PC
Sorry for this long and sometimes hard to understand post but l´m really tired f all this stuff

Dear Jaggerpanzer, I have experienced much the same as you. I really don't believe it is a problem with HP, it is either a Windows problem, a driver problem, or a conflict between the twol. No matter what it is, I concluded it simply can't be fixed.
I since bought a MacBook. I've been happy with it and everything works 100%. It does everything I need and I will never buy another Windows computer no matter who makes it. I don't think you will have any better experience with a Toshiba.
> Microsoft and HP are not helping Us, it seems like they don´t care.
I agree. They don't care. They would rather sell you another computer, which will work OK until you have to install a Windows or driver update, then it will break, then they will sell you another computer...

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's HP's fault because Windows seems to work perfectly on other brands, such as Acer, Toshiba, Dell, etc. The problem seems to be in hardware, specificaly motherboard. I'm trying to find a free spare HP laptop and swap motherboards and see if that fixes the problem.

The exact same problem happened to me a few weeks ago.
I also think it's a problem specfically in HP laptops. I've looked up other websites with the 'No audio output device is installed' problem and people with Toshiba laptops have simply been able to uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers in the device manager and it has fixed it. However, from what I've read, HP laptop owners aren't even able to access the sound drivers in the device manager because it doesn't even appear.
I'm also doubting whether a Windows update has caused this problem. People have been saying this problem happened to them over a year ago. So if an update caused this in July 2009, why is it still available for download and still causing problems now?
I sent an e-mail to HP but they weren't interested because my warranty expired 2 years ago. I sent them a link to this particular topic because it's been going for over a year now and still no one's found a solution. Although I doubt they bothered reading it because they couldn't even get my name right in their reply. They sent me some options of support, including a HP 'Smart friend' but I replied saying why should I bother paying £15 for something that is not guarenteed to fix this problem?
There's no way I'm going to buy another HP product or recommend one to a family member or friend. I don't want to have to put up with their awful customer support again.

Just thought i'd join the throng of complaints so joined the forum..... not sure how relevant this will be now but i recently had a hp dv6500 given to me that the owner could no longer live without the sound working on it, having read the the whole thread ive come to the conclusion hp will never accept responsibility for its faulty product, the tactic of ignoring the problem till it goes away seems to be working well for them - seems to be pretty normal for most large companies these days - pretty poor customer relations to say the least.
Anyways the point of the post is that now i have this laptop to play with i can afford to just treat it as disposable and do what whatever i like to it lol - so as it came with vista installed i wondered if it would run Win7 so like most of you on here i have been down the road of reinstalling etc etc - to date it has installed Win7 ultimate all seems to be working apart from the dreaded sound issue! but - here comes the bit thats made me wonder... each morning i turn the laptop on and it loads normally complete with sound..... if i turn off and back on again after say an hour or so's work then the sound dissapears all day,(get the dreaded "no audio device installed") - till the next morning when the machines been idle and no doubt has cooled down (this machine does seem to run quite hot) i turn it back on and the sound is back.
This is pretty much the norm, it goes when the lappy gets hot - comes back when its cold (you can see where i'm going with this lol) I'm **bleep** sure this has occured to most of you - if the audio chips overheating theirs a good chance it will "fail" to be seen on boot up hence "no audio device installed" which adds much weight to it being hardware related.
My next job will be to take the thing apart autopsy style and have a look at the audio chip/board and see what kind of heatsink or cooling it has and see if it can be improved, at least to prove/disprove my theory - worth a shot dont you think?
if anyones still here i'll post back what i find!
Ray

I had this problem on my DV6700 after finally accepting a windows update (Vista, who'd guess) two days ago.
Following some of the advice on here, I uninstalled the sound card, reinstalled it from System Restore (advanced, hardware) then shut down, removed the battery and let the whole nasty, so hot you could fry an egg on it, laptop cool down completely.
I have sound now. I'm not convinced that it was the reinstallation of the sound card, it might just have been the cooling down that did it, but I don't care, at least I don't have the big ragged BEEP from the motherboard anymore and I can talk to the world on skype again.
I wonder if they ever read these boards and get a flavour of how crap we think their products are.
I will never ever ever buy a HP laptop again, it's been nothing but trouble and annoyance from the get go.

I have a compaq F700 which is the same family of laptops, and am having the same sound issue. I find if i turn the unit off, and let it cool completely, then turn it on, i have sound. I am wondering if this is simply an overheating problem, due to a collection of dust and junk on the fans and heat syncs, and thats why it seems to be a problem that is intermittent or a problem that occurs randomly. I am going to dissassemble, and do a good cleaning and let you guys know.
