Headphones & Laptop Speakers working together on Compaq Presario C700

My Compaq Presario C700 originally came with Windows Vista. I had Windows XP install and now when I tried to use my headphones, the music etc still comes through the laptop speakers. How can I fix this? Thank you in advance.
