I can't switch on the integrated webcam and internal microphone.

I tried communicating through skype but couldn't as I can't use neither the integrated webcam nor internal microphone. I went through the user guide but each time I do what is required am told the integrated webcam isn't swithced on. Skype says my microphone should be ok but no one hears me. How do I check this problem? Thanks
