I have an eMachines computer that's not locked down. It's half a year older than this laptop, but I don't know if that half a year difference had an impact.
Like I said in a previous post, however, HP put out laptops that weren't locked down after the G60 came out, so it wasn't purely an RIAA thing, or else it would have been universal at that point.

You can also see that Allen [above] replaced his G60, and it wasn't locked down.
Doesn't matter to me. As far as I can tell, Sony and Toshiba are not following this policy. I won't buy another HP computer. I've had four. In that same time period, I built my own desktop system back in Jan of 2001. The one I built is still running fine. The HP computers are all dead. HP makes garbage computers. Their poor service is just an additional "perk" of buying their computers.
