Microphone / speaker feedback problem

I am using a HP Elitebook 8740w. I have been having trouble using with my built-in speakers playing back sound the from my built-in microphone array creating feedback on start-up. I have to go into the mixer to mute the microphone array every time the machine starts. I have also been having trouble getting the sound to work when video chatting. Not sure if these two issues are related? Has anyone experienced this or know the solution? Thanks!
