My microphones don't work!

I recently bought a Pro-Sound Uni-Directional Dynamic YU-33 microphone. I plugged it into my Windows Vista Premium Compaq Presario F700, and not only did it not appear on the Recording tab of the Sounds dialogue, but neither Audacity nor Sound Recorder recognised it, instead getting sound from the inbuilt microphone. I tried it with an ancient Audio-Technica PR40 and that didn't work either. The Pro-Sound says 600ohms&50Kohms round the edge, and the Audio-Technica says 250ohms. Does it have something to do with this?
