For such a frequently encountered problem, I, too, am frustrated with HP's complete lack of help. MENTAL NOTE my next laptop NOT HP, because of this current annoyance and a string of others preceding this.
After foraging endless Google hits and forums that didn't resolve the no device problem, I stumbled onto this just clicking around my admin tools panels.
This worked for Win 7 on a Pavillion DV2890nr. Results may vary.
In the Services panel when things work right, there's a Sound, video and game controllers entry, which wasn't displaying (so I couldn't uninstall/ reinstall anything that might be there, which one solution suggested).
However, under Other Devices there was a generic, undescriptive sound driver entry, which in my case had a question mark beside it.
If you have that, right click and update driver. If it's going to work for you, on update that entry will then disappear and the missing Sound, video and game controllers entry will show up. Your audio output device should then be recognized and working no reboot required.
Good luck.
