As many HP user have pointed out (On this board and on other sites on the internet).... Again and again.... And again....
We all have the same common problem...."No Audio Output Device is installed"...
Having this laptop just over a year it ran great, no problems.... Vista, no comment.......
In August I planned to try out Windows 7 and prepped for it..... Backed up every current driver and important document. I did a clean install and boy was I impressed, every driver was found except for a bus driver.... Used my backup, I was fine... HP Laptop + Windows 7 = Bliss!
About a month ago, I was watching a movie in VLC and the sound just went out... No rhyme or reason... Everything checked out.... I just restarted then it was fine.... That happened about twice and I just thought maybe it was the movie or VLC..... Then one time it happened and upon restart the dreaded red X'ed speaker with our favorite phrase..."No Audio Output Device is installed"! WTF? So I checked the device manger and nothing was even listed for sounds.... TOTALLY NOTHING.... So I figured out what drivers I was looking for (By the way, my sound device is Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221) and began trying different drivers sometimes they would work, sometimes they wouldn't.... I even read in another forum that I should try the "Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio". Tried that too... worked once... Then I decided to go back to Vista and see if it was the OS.. Yeah, worked for about an half hour... Nothing.... After remembering I imaged Win 7... I imaged my laptop back to 7, and as of right now not one hint of sound...
So after countless hours, days, I am finding out this is happening to a lot of people, and nothing is being resolved.... I have tried every driver from here to Driverguide and back. The question, is this a hardware failure or a driver glitch? I am extremely frustrated and in need of an answer.... Not just 50 posts explaining the same problem,,,,
Thank you!

Have you tried running a factory installed of HP system recovery?
If the factory installed wont work, definitely you have hardware issue. The sound chip may have broken.
With a hardware problem, any driver with any OS will not work.

Did you ever find an answer to this question? I have been using Windows 7 since the beta's were out and upgraded to full version when it was released. I had audio working on the beta but in the full version have been unable to get the audio working on this laptop. I don't use it much and finally gave up after spending month trying to fix it - I can't believe that HP is not offering any support on this. I was told by HP that this device isn't supported for a Windows 7 upgrade and that they will not be doing anything to support windows 7 drivers for iti.

@rshattuck
You may have different problem with the OP.
Are using the same model with OP?
This model works very well with Win7, in fact all machine running Vista will run well in Win7.
Your Vista support here shows two sound chips, conexant and realtek, do you which one install?
or if you dont know post your hardwareID.
Vista driver should run fine in Win7

I have the same problem with the same laptop model. Lost my audio last week, tried reverting to factory settings, still no audio. Does HP still support out of warranty computers? =(

Ditto...
I was using Media Center and the sound dropped out. Figured it was just Media Center and quit. Sound worked again when I restarted. Then it dropped out while listening to music. Came back. Now it's totally gone. No Audio Output Device Installed. Vista Home Premium 64- bit. SP2. All the regular Microsoft updates.
Sure would be nice if there was a way to see if the hardware is cooked.
This system has been so buggy and the sound, for an "entertainment" system, so totally crappy... 'Course the speakers only work once or twice a year when I hit some bizarre combination of system sleep/wake and earphones plugged/unplugged... The DVD/Media software dumbed itself down after the first update and that's never been able to be resucitated... Sorry- getting off-topic.
Any other system and I'd just assume it was a hardware failure and take it in to get fixed. This one, well, I just don't know.

hi to verybody, regarding the sound problem, I'd try everything to fix it, I'd loss a lot of time trying to fix it,
the system come with Windows vista, i start having sound problem , then I try to upgrade to Win 7,
the problem still there, no sound,
I read a lot of web pages where the users has the same problem ,
I try it with windows Xp , the problem still there ,
in each OS the sound come back some time work for 5 minutes and again the sound is off ..
already I try to fix together with Hp support but nothing happend , they try to do the same thing that I did,
but we can not find the solution ..
the solution from HP support said request the original OS from hp and install ..
ok my fast solution is this, dont loss more your time,
buy a USB external Audio device, install in your computer and wou will get sound and mic ..
