to flymonkie, yea, same here, i dont have any idea when that started happening,(probably like 3-4 months be4 the audio error), have you tried flashing your motherboard? if not, go to hp support, find your drivers(auto-detect recomended), and scroll down until u find the BIOS driver update and that may fix the audio and/or the cd drive issue, but for the audio error u can try doing a search on your machine ,go to start >,then type in search> "recovery manager",click enter, a box will appear, it will ask if you want to perform a program recovery, choose no, then click next, then it will ask you if you want to perform a driver recovery, choose yes, then click next, another box will appear, choose next again, and you should be able to find your audio driver(s), click on it(it should highlight in blue)then click next, and then click finish, it should restart and may bring your audio back(temporarly, or fortunately 4 some, permanently),Good luck!

Danny, my sound is working at this moment, in addition, my DVD/CD drive is showing. Now, I am not sure if it will show at next startup?
What I did was to type in “Recovery” in the search, “Recovery Manager“, then advanced options, then reinstall factory default for “Hardware” and “Software“. I first did software...and selected “HP QuickTouch“, then hardware; audio. It restarted and nothing. I shut the computer (hibernate?) I went back to it an hour later and had to turn it back on (Normally it just pops up with a login when opened). I noticed immediately when I logged in the windows sound. This has happened before only to later have it revert back to no sound. I have not completed a complete restore at this point. I’ll let you know if this may be a permanent fix?

Hello from Croatia.
Same here, I've had dv2840se Verve MS Vista Home Premium 64Bit, AMD turion64, etc purchased May 2008. Noticed problem with sound and quick launch buttons about two weeks ago. Tried everything (bios, UAA, XP drivers, system restore, restore to original condition, "upgraded" to Vista 7 (not a clean install, but upgrade), and everything else. Symptoms - sound comes and goes, sometimes device gets recognized and installs, but everything lasts until system is restarted.
Googling just reveals that this problem is very widespread! HP, please help. I really don't want to sell this comp and buy a new one. Thanks!
Davor

I don't know if this will help any of you but I thought I might as well throw my experience on here.
I installed the stupid microsoft sp2 update and then restarted my HP pavilion dv6256. When the computer finished starting up, I noticed a red X on the sound speaker. I thought it was muted but when I put the curser over the speaker icon, it said no audio device was installed. I went to the control panel and clicked the sound icon and it had absolutely nothing in the window. Nothing to update, uninstall or anything. Nothing, appearently, was installed. I encountered this problem before on a different Toshiba Laptop that I have and then attempted to do what I did that fixed the toshiba. I went to the HP website (hp.com). clicked support and drivers. then clicked the download drivers and software bubble. I typed in my exact laptop name and it pulled up all the drivers it had for the computer. It only had one audio driver so I clicked it and downloaded it. Once it downloaded, I installed the driver and once it finished the red X was gone and the little audio waves appeared next to the speaker as normal.
I don't know if all of you are having the problem that I had but maybe this might help someone. I'm sorry if this doesn't help, just keep on the fourms because whenever I had a problem I found the solution in the forums. : ) Good luck.

We're all having this "No Audio Output Device is Installed" problem. It seems to be coupled with the QuickTouch on screen display.. and the death of the DVD player seems to follow very closely.
Based on extensive research, there is no fix to this problem. (There are varying degrees of this problem, and sometimes a short-term fix on the order of a few minutes to a few hours may be possible).
I recommend everybody read this thread (and direct others to it as well):
There is some interesting discussion in there, including some othere "intervention" that may be possible between us and HP.
