No audio device on Compaq V6444 but Conexant HDA is "working"

Got code 39 on the Conexant High Definition Audio -- rolled back the driver which eliminated the error code, but now "no audio device" is detected.  Read through all the posts with this problem  and chatted with HP Tech -- Downloaded Intel chipset, downloaded UAA, there is no Conexant High Definition Driver on HP support for V6444.us; however I have used the update driver button.  With all I done... conexant driver is version 3.23.0.0  File versions are 4.0.8.0.  I have disabled, uninstalled, installed by pointing to swsetup/audio.  However it possible that directory was corrupted.

Oh and system restore which was my second choice after device manager remedies refused to restore at any earlier point.

Thinking about uninstalling Win Pro Sp3 and reinstalling it if it will do it, to see if that will help it.  I do have system recovery disks but they are a 12 hours drive away and I'll not be there for 3 more weeks.

For one more try, please refer me to a clean conexant high definition audio driver set and let me know if there is anyway to manually point xp to where the soundcard is located.  I see the location reference as 65535.

I will be most grateful to anyone who can help me get this fixed with a complete system reinstall.

Hi,

a) Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Devices Manager

When You will be there choose from menu of this window: View -> Show hiden hardware. Is it listed now with any yellow or question mark?

b) Try also this:

Control panel/ add hardware
