Occasionally, my sound gets distorted and slow, and the Notebook seems to slow or stop totally?

HP Envy 17 Notebook PC, Windows7 using Beats, no changes but has been doing it for months. Just never thought to ask before now. Could my problem be too many audio programs running, My Audio and Sound shows IDT Hi-Def CODEC, Intel(R) Display Audio, and ATI Hi-Def Audio Device all "Enabled" at the same time. Is this normal?
