Odd Audio problem w/ CQ60-200 on XP SP3

(This post is a clone, but because I made a bad title and no tags first time and it was being ignored ... 15 views in 15 hours)

I have Compaq Presario CQ60-200. It has been entirely formatted to Windows XP SP3.

I have installed a Conexant HD SmartAudio 221 driver which runs sound, but does wierd things. Most notably:

>>>The normal volume control has absolutely no effect on volume/muting. Its controlled by the wave volume next to the normal one, which appears when the speaker Icon is double-clicked.

>>>When I plug in headphones, the headphones work with it just fine....except, the laptops main speakers are still on. They should deactivate when a speaker is plugged in externally. (the whole point in my case is to work with noisy programs and music without waking up the family at 7 a.m.)

All I can figure is that Im on the wrong driver. Any suggestions?

I had the same issue but played around with it and configured my headset as the default, you can also open your volume mixer, etc. and mute extra sounds such as IE and other programs that may be using the audio and select the audio they use manually.

Don't know if this will help you, but it's just a suggestion,
