Only subwoofer works, mute button stuck orange

I've got an HP Dv7 1261WM - though, this seems to be an issue with other models as well (I've done a lot of searching online).  I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

My biggest complaint is that the sound for my laptop only comes out of the subwoofer.  The top two speakers produce no sound at all (except when "testing" the speakers through the device manager).  I can live with the mute button being orange forever - though, I include that in my issue in case they're related.

I have attempted:

  • roll back drivers
  • uninstall and reinstall sound drivers
  • redownload MediaSmart Menu
  • I updated my BIOS
  • I did the strange thing suggested where I update the drivers, turn off the laptop, remove the power cord and battery and hold down the power button for a minute.  Then put the battery back in, power cord back in and power up
  • Restore point was no good - there's no point before installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (these issues occurred before SP1 - I installed SP1 as an attempted solution)

I'm at a loss for what to do.   Suggestions?
