All IDT drivers have been un/installed. I restored the system to last week.
I cannot think of any other software glitches that I haven't troubleshot.
I think this must be a hardware issue. I read somewhere that an internal ribbon cable easily falls off of the older dv models that affects audio. Has HP fixed this in the later models?
Mixer levels are in motion. Windows 7 occiasonally 'detects hardware change' but does/can not do anything about it.

If you check the device manager, what does it have listed for the device status for the audio device(s)?
Have you tried installing the newest driver from the HP website? Updated the BIOS? Tried running the Microsoft Hardware Troubleshooter?
