I'd been having a problem with the sound on my computer, and Microsoft troubleshooting told me to go on the manufacturer's website and download any updates. So I dowloaded the sound driver for my laptop model (IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC Driver, for Windows Vista 64-bit) and now, the sound no longer works. The sound icon on the right-hand side of the taskbar has an X on it, and when I try to raise/lower the sound or to mute it, nothing happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In Device Manager try uninstalling the sound card and then search for new hardware. Try the search feature for the new hard ware.
