For in warranty notebooks with this specific problem I do recommend contacting HP. I suggest making a clone of the hard drive with Macrium or Diskeeper before sending the notebook in for repair. That way you can correct surprises. This sounds more like a system board issue.

A "system board issue" as in a physical short? No memory to clear?

A system board issue means a hardware problem. It does not mean a "short". It has nothing to do with memory modules.

Re: Probook 4720s internal speaker not working (headphones do)

I FOUND THE SOLUTION FOR THIS!

After being awake yesterday to 4h00 AM trying to reinstall drivers etc, I found this problem to be a hardware issue (SOLVABLE). I noticed a lot of laptops using IDT sound chips have this issue (I have a HP 8540p).

Basically something in the headphone jack is bent/twisted, making the PC think there's a jack connected. Just open the IDT control panel and get a toothpick. Gently poke inside the headphone jack picking the metal contacts. I did this for maybe 30 seconds until I noticed the IDT audio manager changed the headphones state to unconnected, and now I have speakers working!

Hope this helps, feel free to copy/paste this around forums, has a lot of people with Dells are complaining also.

I had this same problem on an HP 6550b running Windows 7 Enterprise. The only thing I could get to work was to tick or untick "Listen to this device" in the Sound control panel on the Recording > Microphone > Listen tab (with "Playback through this device: set to Headphones...).

To easily toggle this setting when I wanted to switch between external speakers/headset and internal speakers, I have a desktop shortcut linked to a little vbs macro as follows:

Dim Wsh
Set Wsh = Wscript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
Wsh.Run "control.exe mmsys.cpl,,recording"
WScript.Sleep 300
Wsh.SendKeys "{TAB}{TAB}{TAB}{TAB}"
WScript.Sleep 300
Wsh.SendKeys "{DOWN}{DOWN} "
WScript.Sleep 300
Wsh.SendKeys "^{TAB} {ENTER}{ESC}"

That worked great for me! I didn't wait for headphones to be unconnected though.

I just played some music. Gently poked around headphone jack with a toothpick, then pushed my headphone inside, remove it and... Magic! Built in speakers started to play the music :-). Thanks!

BTW. I have HP ProBook 6440b.

You are magical. I couldn't find a toothpick, so I used a prong of a plastic fork and poked around for a tiny bit. Then, like this other person said they did, I plugged the headphones in and then unplugged them. Magic. My speakers work again.

Thank you!
