I had already uninstalled Steam and all of its games along with Skype and Google Talk. I performed all your recommend sequences; no audio.
After second restart, Task Manager check shows one instance of audiodg.exe.

Hi,
Could you try the following and let me know.
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the IDT device and select Properties. Click the Driver tab and then click the 'Update Driver' button - select the option to 'Search automatically for updated driver software'.
Is a more recent driver downloaded and installed and if so, has it made any difference?
Regards,

The Device Manager reports in a dialog box: The best driver software is already installed and that windows has determined the driver is up to date.

Hi,
My next suggestion will be a bit more of a pain to try, but considering you have audio when booting into HP Quickweb, I would definitely say that it's worth trying.
First of all, uninstall all McAfee security software - before doing so, make sure you have the necessary installer/disc to reinstall the application and any Activation Key that is required.
Restart the notebook.
Follow the procedure as before to uninstall and then reinstall the IDT driver as shown again below.
--------------------------------------------------
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp4930
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - when the prompt to remove the current driver appears, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load. Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices. Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button.
--------------------------------------------------
Restart the notebook once again and see if you now have audio.
In either case, reinstall your Security software and let me know.

DP-K

I performed all as instructed; no audio. I ran the sound diagnostic; same result, not fixed. I am reinstalling the McAfee security suite.

Hi,
Ok, try the following method to ensure the IDT driver is uninstalling completely.
Download and install the free version of Revo Uninstaller from the link below.
http://www.revouninstaller.com/download-freeware-v
Run revo and use it to uninstall theIDT Audio software. Right click on the icon of the program and select Uninstall - this will initially launch the IDT uninstall routine, so let this complete, but if it requests a restart, cancel it and proceed with the next option to be displayed in Revo. During this process you may be asked to delete registry entries, just select all and then click delete. Do the same for any left-over files and folders. Once the uninstall has completed, restart the notebook.
Now try installing the IDT software from the installer I linked to in my previous post.
Any change?
Regards,
DP-K

I performed the uninstall using the new software. No audio.
Troubleshooting shows the same: not fixed.

Hi,
Try running both of the Microsoft 'Fixits' on the link below - Both are located under the tab 'Step 2: Use a troublshooter'.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/no
Do either of these help or give any more information regarding the problem?

Hi,
I ran both troubleshooters from the Windows site. I think I may have done that a while ago. No new information. I will attach the resulting screen.
I just wrote to IDT about some strange behavior within the driver control panel. I copied it below along with an image of that control panel. I'm not sure that their site is for end users, so I don't know if I'll get a response. If I do, I'll let you know. If this new information helps here, please let me know.

I have an HP Mini 210-1142CL, Product XA 523UA #ABA running Windows 7 Starter. I began having crackling noises in the audio after I noticed a new icon appearing in a window when I clicked the speaker icon in the Taskbar. This icon was for "Independent Headphones" and was not present when I bought this computer back in 2009. I don't remember if an automated update to the audio driver had previously occurred before I noticed the new icon. I attempted to fix the sound problem by manually updating the driver from within the Windows Device Manager. Once the new driver installed I had no sound at all. I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall many times using different drivers with the help of a technician in a HP customer forum titled "Reinstalled IDT audio driver now no sound on HP Mini 210-1100 Windows 7".
The reason I suspect the driver, is that when I bring up the IDT Audio Control Panel, a window appears titled "IDT HD sound". In this window, under the Playback tab, I cannot change the setting for Speakers and Headphones to be the "default communication device". When I check the Recording tab, I cannot set the internal mic as the default recording device or as the default communication device. I don't have any "Independent Headphones" or a "Headset Mic". Is this a symptom of a driver problem?
The current driver is version 6.10.6284.0 dated 5/14/2010

Hi,
Good idea and it will certainly be interesting to see if they can shed any light on this issue.
I can't view the images yet, but in the meantime, another option to try is the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the IDT device and select Properties. Click the Driver tab and then click 'Update Driver'. Click the option 'Browse my computer for driver software' and then click 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'. Make sure there is a tick in the box next to 'Show compatible hardware'.
You should now see a list of drivers Windows sees as compatible with your sound chip - most likely, the first one in the list will be simply 'High Definition Audio Device' - left click this once to highlight it and then click Next and install this driver.
When complete, restart the notebook and see if you have any audio.
If there is still no audio, repeat the above process, but choose the next driver in the list and install, then restart.
Do any of the listed drivers work?
Regards,
DP-K
