I have a HP1428 ca DV7, running Win 7 Home Prem 64 bit. Recently my volume control seems to have gotten a mind of its own. At first I thought it was related to HP MediaSmart, so I removed it. This stopped the volume control bar from constantly and irregularly flashing on the screen. However when I open the mixer in windows I see it is still acting very strange, the volume increases in fits and starts. None of the volume controls at the top of the keyboard don't work. The MediaSmart button stays lit, the mute button doesn't, and the volume control slide doesn't work either. I thought that by removing MediaSmart and reinstalling it that it would correct the problem, it didn't.
Thanks.

Hi,
Try a Hard Reset as follows.
Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.

Hi and thank you for your quick response, but saddly it didn't work. However the Mute button is now lit red and i'm not getting any sound at all. I did unmute the sound through the speaker on the mixer, the one in the bottom right corner of the screen. It would seem the mute button on the keyboard is overrideing the volume control. Also there is now a new item on the mixer control panel called "Quick Launch Button" it is randomly flashing, almost jittering. It wasn't there before I did the hard boot, but this "jittering" seemed to be symptomatic of the problem. The MediaSmart button is still lit.
I haven't reloaded the MediaSmart, because I frankly couldn't figure out which one on the list I needed.

Hi,
It may be a hardware problem with the capacitive strip itself, but regarding the audio, try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp4507
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load. Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices. Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.
The MediaSmart application you refer to is HP MediaSmart SmartMenu, which can downloaded and installed from the link below - you must have at least one MediaSmart application installed before installing SmartMenu.
Regards,
