dv7-1285dx IDT pc audio has stopped working

I recently received error message saying that IDT pc audio has stopped working.  This was followed by another window saying that the Sigmatel C-Major audio driver caused the problem.  It told me to contact hp to get the driver update.  When i went to the HP site it did not list an update for this audio driver.  I still have sound after this message occurs but the IDT audio enhancement features stop working until I RESTART the computer.  I followed the hp support advice and reinstalled the driver.  The hp support rep that  I talked to suggested checking this forum for a direct link to the IDT/Sigmatel driver which I need to remedy this problem.  I also checked out HP's resolving sound problems page and proceeded to reset the BIOS to default settings.  So far this problem has not occurred again but it happens at random times when I am not even using any programs requiring sound.  I wondered if anyone has some information on a UPDATE for IDT High definition drivers that might fix this problem. I am running vista home premium on a 64 bit enabled HP pavillion dv7-1285dx. I would be much obliged for a direct link for this driver. To solve and fix the problem, follow this workaround: Click on Start Menu, then click on Control Panel. Click on Hardware and Sound link. Click on Sound applet. In the Sound window, open the Playback tab if it’s not yet already opened. Right click on Speakers/Headphones and then select Properties on the right click menu. Depending on which sound card or audio driver the computer is using, choose one of the following trick that fit your environment: If you have an “Effects” tab, click it and select “Disable System Effects.” If you have an “Enhancements” tab, click it and select “Disable All Enhancements.” If you have something else that is related to the above two tabs, click on the tab and try to disable whatever enhanced features that can be disabled. Click OK. Try to playback the MP3s and audio song tracks with WMP 11 again. Now all tracks and songs should play fine.

I'm suffering from the exact same situation. I followed your instructions but I still don't have any sound. Any other ideas?

BTW, my system is the same as the original poster.

Hello mishongj,

Here is a link to the latest IDT High Definition audio codec driver, which is nearly 5 yrs old.  There are no HP updates for this driver, and I doubt there will be since this notebook is several years old.

Hello nithiyanand,

I understand that your IDT audio stopped working.

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

If you’re still getting an error, go into device manager and uninstall the IDT audio.

Restart the computer.

This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the audio.

Here is a link that will show you how to get to your device manager.
