microphone does not work on live messenger

When using MSN Live Messenger, I can see and hear the person I am chatting with.  He an see me but cannot hear me.  Using routine tests, my microphone seems to work.  What can I do to resolve this issue?  I have a ProBook 4530s.  Thanks for your help.

Dear Manjunath:

Thank you for a very detailed response.  The response did not appear to address the issue of an integrated microphone (comes with my laptop which is a ProBook 4530s) which I am using on my laptop.  I did not use any USB devices or external headsets (yet).  The recording signals as you indicate do in fact show that the microphone is working.  Still the person I chat with can see me but not hear me.  I hope this helps.  Thánks.
